When I had my second baby I decided to invest in hypnobirthing and It was the best thing I did. I had chosen to try for a vbac (vaginal birth after Caesarian) and thought if I am going to do this, I am going to do everything I can to make it a positive experience.
I found a local teacher who came to our house once a week for 4 evenings. She talked through our previous birth experience, helped us to know more about our options around birth and taught us relaxation techniques to use during labour. We then practised them together in the evenings leading up to the birth. These techniques and mentality work with your body to help you stay calm and confident and to ultimately stop your body going into flight or fight mode which causes more tension and more pain. They also equip your birth partner with some great tools to help you through the experience. I guess it’s just like an athlete preparing for an event. You wouldn’t expect them to perform at their best if they were in the wrong state of mind.
